The report of the panel The Vesuvian Lost Cities before the “Discovery”: Sources, Experience, Imagery in the Early Modern Period, presented on March 20, 2025, at the 71st Annual Meeting of the Renaissance Society of America in Boston, MA (USA), is now available online.

The panel, curated by Giulia Ceriani Sebregondi and Francesca Mattei, featured contributions from members of the VeLoCi research team and was coordinated by Ilaria Andreoli (INHA).

The document summarizes the topics addressed in each of the four presentations, which explored the iconographic, textual, and material sources used to understand the Vesuvian cities prior to the 18th-century excavations. Following the presentations, the discussion with the audience focused on the genesis of the project and the motivations behind the traditional narrative of the Vesuvian cities that the project aims to challenge. Particular attention was given to the presentation of the VeLoCi Database.

The report is available in the “Results” section of the VeLoCi website: The Vesuvian Lost Cities before the “Discovery”: Sources, Experience, Imagery in the Early Modern Period
