VeLoCi in the Classroom. Start of the course "Rome and the Renaissance" (A.Y. 2024-2025)
Roma Tre University, Department of Architecture
To establish an active dialogue between research activities and university teaching, the Roma Tre Research Unit has designed a new program for the elective course “Rome and the Renaissance”, launched in the second semester of this academic year at the Department of Architecture and specifically related to the themes explored in the VeLoCi project
Now in its fourth year, the course for the 2024-2025 academic year is dedicated to the study of antiquity in the Renaissance, and the concept of ruins as architectural projects. These topics will be examined through historical, architectural and critical analyses of key projects carried out in Rome during the Sixteenth century. The course is curated by Francesca Mattei, Associate Investigator of the VeLoCi project, with the collaboration of Giorgia Aureli, postdoctoral research fellow.
The first lecture, held on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, saw strong participation, drawing an audience of over one hundred students from all the department’s undergraduate and graduate courses.
The course, which will conclude on Wednesday, June 11, combines traditional lectures, seminars, conferences, and on-site visits throughout Rome. A key component will be the workshop “Living with Ruins”, guiding students through the analysis of a Renaissance drawing, and the critical interpretation of an urban area. The students, once divided into groups, will compare the historical images with the current condition of the site.
